MUMBAI, India (AP) — Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed during a confrontation with an intruder at his Mumbai residence early Thursday morning, resulting in hospitalization and surgery.

The 54-year-old actor, who lives in Mumbai with his actress wife Kareena Kapoor and their two children, was rushed to the hospital following the incident.

Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital reported that out of the six wounds Khan sustained, two were critical, with one particularly close to his spine, according to a doctor cited by the Press Trust of India.

Indian media outlets reported that the intruder entered Khan's home around 2:30 a.m. and fled after the stabbing. Additionally, a female staff member at Khan's residence was injured and is receiving medical attention.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and searching for the attacker.

Kareena Kapoor released a statement, requesting the media and fans to exercise patience and avoid speculation as the police investigation is ongoing.

Saif Ali Khan, who is also a film producer, has appeared in around 70 films and TV shows. He is the son of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, a former Indian cricket team captain, and Sharmila Tagore, a celebrated Bollywood actress.

Khan has received numerous awards for his work in Hindi cinema, including seven Filmfare Awards. In 2010, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor.
