Ever since she was a child, Aaliyah had a vision of herself as a musical icon, often using her Barbie dolls to act out her dreams through play.
"The dolls would sing and perform as if they were alive. There were moments when I tried to participate too," Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, who is also a writer and director, told TODAY.com.
Aaliyah's childhood fantasies became reality as she grew up to be one of the most acclaimed R&B artists of the '90s. Tragically, the singer, full name Aaliyah Haughton, died at the age of 22 in 2001 in a plane crash.
Almost two and a half decades after Aaliyah's death, the legendary singer is honored with a Barbie doll designed in her image.

The doll is part of the Barbie Music Collector Series, launching on the singer's birthday, Jan. 16, and will be available for purchase on the Mattel Shop for a suggested retail price of $55. (As of Jan. 16 at 9:34 a.m., the doll is sold out).
Haughton worked with Mattel to craft a doll that reflected his sister's appearance and captured her fashion sense. The result? A striking doll wearing a miniature version of the outfit Aaliyah wore in the music video for her hit song “One in a Million.”
Haughton recalls, “This marked the release of her second album, and ‘One in a Million’ was crucial in evolving her sound towards themes of maturity, empowerment, and confidence during that phase of her career.”

Haughton collaborated with Mattel to design the doll's attire, which includes a stylish faux leather black top with matching pants featuring lace-up details. The ensemble is rounded out with a zippered vest with detachable sleeves and fashionable sunglasses. Additionally, Aaliyah's stylist, Derek Lee, contributed to the design process.
